Natural Dry Eye Relief

Dry 7

Whether they are the result of seasonal allergies or a long night staring at a screen, dry eyes are a common plight for many unlucky individuals, and finding a solution to this irritating dilemma can be tricky at the best of times. There are many over the counter and clinical solutions available to relieve dry eyes, but they are often expensive and temporary, making a natural solution more desirable.

Natural solutions to dry eyes are less expensive, more convenient to administer, and are less harmful due to their natural qualities. Many people find the necessary ingredients to natural solutions already in their homes, or find that the solution is more of a lifestyle change than a physical remedy.

This article will highlight a number of natural dry eye relief options that are easily administered at home for low cost, convenience, and (hopefully) some relief!

Wash Your Eyelids

One of the easiest ways to relieve dry eyes is by gently washing your eyelids with warm water. Simply wet a clean soft cloth then dab the cloth against your closed eye, gently moving the cloth up and down and in a circular motion against your eyelid. Be sure to clean both upper and lower eyelids and do not be afraid to repeat this process as many times as it takes to feel relief. If you frequently find that your eyelashes are crusty or goopy this solution may provide all the relief you need. If you notice the irritation is getting worse, stop washing your eye and read on for an alternative solution.

Get More Sleep

Easier said than done, but getting more sleep can make a huge difference in the dryness of your eyes. Ever notice how the longer you force your eyes to stay open when it is time for bed, the more dry they become? Not allowing your eyes to rest drys them out because they are not closed for long enough to moisten properly. If getting enough sleep is a problem because of work or a busy schedule, then make a point of closing your eyes for extended periods of time throughout the day, even if it is for an extra minute or two when you are in the bathroom or listening to music at your desk. Allowing your eyes to rest will likely decrease the irritation that comes from dry eyes, and a little extra sleep never hurt anyone!

Drink More Water

Drink more water. Similar to sleeping, this natural dry eye relief tip is easier said than done. We have all been told to drink more water by someone in our lives, a Doctor, a mother or an obnoxious friend, and their advice is valid in the case of dry eyes. You don’t have to be an expert to understand that a plant with dry, cracked soil requires water to thrive. Our eyes are similar, of course, unlike a plant, you don’t pour the water on your eyes to make it feel better. Be sure to drink at least 100 ounces of water a day and more if you are doing anything strenuous. Make sure that there is enough water in your body to hydrate those dry eyes!

Change Your Diet

Changing your diet can make a big difference in how dry your eyes are. Changing your diet can be a hard pill to swallow, and maybe taking a pill sounds like a better solution, but we are talking about natural solutions to dry eyes in this article. Including more omega-3s in your diet is a way to relieve dry eyes. Omega-3s can be found in fish, walnuts, chia seeds, and flax seeds. Mix a few of these natural food options into your diet and monitor for changes in the dryness of your eyes.

Use a Humidifier

For people who live in a dry climate or experience very dry winters, turning a humidifier on at night can make a big difference for their dry eyes and skin. Humidifiers are certainly the most expensive solution listed in this article, but they typically won’t break the bank if you shop conservatively. Humidifiers create more moisture in the air allowing your body (and eyes) to soak up that moisture as you sleep. Many people experience immediate relief from using a humidifier which hopefully offsets the cost of purchasing one. Humidifiers can be found at a number of locations.

Dry eyes are a frequent inconvenience for many, and the hunt for a permanent solution is never ending. Fortunately, there are number of natural remedies that provide temporary, and relatively inexpensive, relief. For any individual experiencing dry eyes, any of the solutions listed above has the potential to provide relief. If one doesn’t do the trick, then try them all at once! There is little harm in drinking extra water and sneaking in a little more sleep.
