Understand Your Study Habits

Before you decide whether or not to take a formal GED class, you should understand what kind of learner you are. If you’re disciplined enough to make yourself do at least a half hour of GED practice questions and studying a few times a week and can schedule your exam in a timely manner, then taking a class may be unnecessary. Just because a typical high school degree did not work out for you does not mean you can’t buckle down and study for this series of tests.

If you already know that you won’t have the discipline to sit through practice tests alone, it may be better to take the time to take a class. If your schedule is hectic, that may give you even more reason to take a class, because in the long run it may actually save you time. It’s better to take a class and pass the GED rather than not taking a class, failing, and having to re-take the exam again and again.

Free Regular and Online GED Classes

Free vs Paid

So taking a GED class may very well be worth the cost of time, but is it worth the money cost?

It is if there is no money cost. Because many educational organizations believe all have the right to a basic education, or at least a basic certification, many free GED programs exist for those who are in financial need or even those who don’t demonstrate financial need. FinishYourDiploma.org and NationalLiteracyDirectory.org have great test prep center directories. Note, not all of the centers listed on these websites may specifically provide GED prep, but rather the HiSET or the TASC (other high school equivalency exams). Depending on which exam you take and your state of residence, be sure to confirm that the center you’re interested in provides test prep for that specific exam. Many of these classes are free.

Some learning centers also offer online GED classes. These online GED classes are an even better value for those who have difficult schedules and need to manage their time in a flexible way.

For those who have trouble finding either free online GED classes that suit their needs, there are also a few paid options. The official GED organization sells a program on their GED market place website for $40. Study.com has its own study guides (as well as a lot more educational material that go well beyond the GED) for a monthly fee. There are various payment tiers than range from $39.99/month to 199.99/month – some of their courses can count towards college credit.
